Day 4: It Gets Greater Later
It Gets Greater Later
by Virghost
Explain the Darkness and Light that this album brought?
When I recorded this album I was going through a really dark time. I was going through a very messy divorce. The album was originally supposed to be me experimenting and showing more of my southern rap roots and influences from groups like Three 6 Mafia, UGK, and 8Ball & MGJ. I was more known for an east coast style from my previous releases so I wanted to show my southern influences this time around. The album was also supposed to be a true introduction of Virghost to Nashville. The album still showcased all of that but in the middle of recording the album, all of my personal struggles happened which brought that dark element to it. I don't know if there was really a light side to the album. I guess me being able to express myself in the thick of that situation was like finding light in the darkness.
You had a public breakup that was also explained and displayed on the album. Why do you choose to put so much "personal" into your music?
Man music is like therapy for me. I started writing poetry to get myself through personal situations as a teen, so it's been that way from the jump. I also am personal because I know there are a lot of people out there going through a lot of the same things I'm going through and they may not be able to express it or have the outlet. I want those people to know that they are not alone in what they are dealing with. I've had so many people over the years come to me and tell me they got through a situation because they heard one of my songs that were relatable to their own situation. That's more valuable than any album sale. Also, there is supreme strength in being vulnerable and personal in your art and I embrace that.
Explain how Now A Days came to conception.
I had freestyle I recorded to a Curren$y beat called “Reservoir Dogs” that I recorded at my house. I was also recording my album at my homie Kxng Klxpsy's studio. I had already had all my beats for the album, or so I thought. I stumbled across this one last beat...the Nowadays beat and I just had to put it on the album. I purchased it but didn't know what to write about. As I was playing the beat I inadvertently started rapping the “Reservoir Dogs” verse and it fit perfectly to the “Nowadays” beat. I went to the studio, split the 32 bars into 16’s, and added the hook on the spot.
Why are the words “Yeah Ho” so consistent and prevalent in your music.
Lol. I'm from Memphis. That's the only way to explain it. I'm a big Three 6 Mafia fan. I have to pay homage.
Dealing with your ex-wife infidelity has that affected how you view women? Ever think you will LOVE the same again?
I thought it would but it didn't. That situation with that one woman was that situation with that one woman. Every woman isn't like that. I found that to be even truer later on. I'm married now and I love my wife tremendously. I could never love the same. I've grown in love. Upward movement. I love better these days. I know better these days.
Voice reviewers often have seen this album as a little too dark, with little uplift that you are known for. Do you still feel that was the right decision to the album?
Indeed, I do. That was a chapter my life. That's what was really happening to me. I wouldn't change a thing about it. It was growth in real time. It was art in real time. Dark times were the reason for the dark content. Uplift comes on the next album, No Sleep Under The Circumstances.
