Day 2: Trail N Error

Trial N Error

by Virghost

Is that a depiction of Jesus Christ holding you on the album cover? What do you feel about religion?

Yes, it's a depiction of what society and history have made us believe Jesus looked like. I don't believe Jesus looked like that but that's what I was taught he looks like my whole life. As far as what I feel about religion. I believe it has good elements and bad elements just like a lot of things. I was raised in a strict Christian home. My dad was a pastor. Some of those values have been instilled in me and have helped me in my life and evolution but a lot of those values also held me back heavily as a person. For me, a lot of pain came from religion. I'm not a religious person myself but I respect it for what it is and the people that believe in it. I talk to God directly though. No middle man needed.

What exactly was your trails N error of that time period in your life?

At that time I was trying to figure out a lot of things as a rapper. I no longer wanted to just be accepted as a rapper in Memphis. I wanted to be the best rapper in Memphis. I didn't really have a blueprint on what to do so I just paved my own way and learned through trial and error. That's part of the reason I named the album “Trial N Error”... We started the SQUAD. movement with no outside help. We did everything ourselves. We put on our own shows, built our own studios, recorded and mixed our own music, designed our own flyers...everything. Nobody taught us these things. We learned through trial and error. It made us extremely self-sufficient. Of course, there were a lot of personal trials and errors in my life at that time as well which is all in the music. Just juggling being a family man and an artist at 24 years old.

Assassin Theme was a gigantic record for you explain, the night of recording.

I wrote and recorded that song right after my youngest daughter was born. I credit that God energy to her. It was a few months after I released The Memphiasco in 2011. I wasn't satisfied. I wanted more. I wanted to be the best rapper in the city. I also was getting a lot of sneak disses thrown at me by other Memphis rappers because of my momentum and the success of the SQUAD. movement. I felt backed into a corner. I had been listening to Section. 80 by Kendrick Lamar and Take Care by Drake heavily. I wanted that same airy sound. I found the perfect beat to match that vibe. I wrote the song and went in and recorded it that same night. It became my biggest and most popular song at that time. That song took me to whole nother level as a rapper.

Explain what C.O.V.I means.

Well, I spell it Seeoveye. It always means different things on different days. Kind of like the Joker's scars on The Dark Knight.

Trails featuring Megan J. is one of our favorite records on the album. Do you think you will ever create music with your ex-wife again?

Nah, I wouldn't
