Elwood's Shack Review

Elwood's Shack |
Sandwiches
have got to be one of my favorite foods.
I’m not talking about your average packaged loaf of bread and off the
rack ass cold cuts with Kraft cheese slices.
When I say “sandwich” I am referring to an artistic rendering of quality
ingredients: premium meats, breads and cheeses and fresh vegetables with all types’
sauces and condiments. In other words..
bougie sandwiches.

But because Im
not one dimensional in any aspect, I also love a good “hood classic”. For instance,
a good beef bologna and egg sandwich on
toast with American cheese and grape jelly? Or even better with a beef smoked sausage instead of the bologna
(Hillshire farms of course)? WHOO CHILE!.
After perusing the menu, Elwood’s seemed to be
one of only a few shops that manages to provide BOTH.
So while struggling
to stretch my funds till pay (essencefest wiped me out!) and not having to
resort to fast food dollar menus, I checked Yelp and Urbanspoon for some good
cheap eat options. Elwood’s was a top
search result on both sites.
Now it’s a bit
hard to find, the directions say that it’s off summer, but it’s really almost
adjacent to the Lowe’s that faces Perkins.
Elwood’s name is not a misnomer;
it is literally a small shack with limited space and seating. When I first arrived, I was almost afraid. “Hell have I walked into the place that fed
the hunters from “deliverance”? Were my
first thoughts. However, the staff was friendly and attentive and immediately relieved
my concerns. The reviews strongly
recommended the beef brisket sandwich and the steelhead fish taco’s but im
extra picky about bbq and not really interested in tacos.
I was
intrigued by the all beef meatball sandwich. It was 9.00 and described as “roasted
garlic, red pepper marinara, and smothered in mozzarella cheese. I don’t and never have eaten pork and
normally meatball subs are made with a combination of beef and pork sausage.
I ordered
the sandwich to go. It took about 10 minutes and they brought it to me bagged and
ready to go. When I took a look inside I
was amazed. First, the sandwich was HUGE.
It could technically no longer be described as a sandwich. Definitely a
sub or hoagie. I'm a big fan of my food “looking”
good and the sandwich was tv ready perfection. Perfectly shaped meatballs,
cheese melted, bread toasted. I had to take
a bite immediately.
The sandwich
was better than it looked. Man. I mean when I took a bit the cheese pulled
away from the sandwich in a cartoonish fashion. The marinara was delicious and
the damn meatballs were huge and tasty (though I did add a dash of salt). The bread was perfectly toasted and the
perfect complement to the meatballs. Yes. You Need to get some Elwood's in your
life. I will probably visit today and
try out the beef bologna sandwich. Its going
down.
