A Binghamton, New York middle school is facing major backlash after allegedly strip-searching four black 12-year-old girls on January 15th after they were suspected of being in possession of drugs. The alleged reasoning for searching the girls is that they were “hyper and giddy during their lunch hour.”
An advocacy group called Progressive Leaders said the alleged searches were also done without the consent of the girls’ parents, who were told about the incident after they all got to their homes. As a result of the news, almost 200 community members flooded a school board meeting to ask why the school board did not handle the situation and take action against the alleged search.
The Binghamton City School District issued a statement denying the claims of strip searching the girls. In the school’s response, they said “Unfortunately, our students shared that these actions have had the unintended consequences of making the students feel traumatized. We sincerely apologize for the impact this has had and are working with these families to support their children’s success.”
