NFL To Support Devon Still Daughter's Cancer Regimens After Cut
Devon Still has been cut once again from the Cincinnati Bengals, but the athlete says there's nothing but love between himself and the team.
Cincinnati reports Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis made the announcement on Saturday. Still was cut last year, but was allowed to play on the practice roster so he can still keep health insurance to cover his daughter Leah's cancer treatments. The four-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer that affects premature nerve cells. Still and his daughter's story won over the country, as well as Leah's courage. Still told reporters he's optimistic about his football career and grateful for Bengals support.
Even though he was cut from the team, the NFL will cover his health insurance for an additional five years.
"My heart is still with the Bengals," Still said. "First of all, they drafted me and gave me the opportunity to be in the NFL. Second of all they did everything they could to help me save my daughter's life and to raise awareness for pediatric cancer. There's nothing that can break that bond, can break that relationship, because my daughter is more important than this game any day. They stepped up and helped me take care of my daughter. There's nothing that can break that."
Lewis says Still will more than likely return to the NFL when the time is right.
"Unfortunately we can only keep so many players," he said. "Devon had a good preseason for us and he's got to feel good about that. He put a good foot forward. An opportunity will come, whether it comes here down the line or somewhere else. I think he really did a good job this preseason. It's the unfortunate part of professional sports. Not everyone can stay and be there at the end."
