Man Kills Officer Who Was Trying to Help Him Get Home Safely
KY State Police trooper Joseph Ponder was trying to help out a driver he pulled over that didn't have a valid driver's license with two women and two children in the car, and he was later shot dead during his efforts.
Ponder was in his car, trying to secure lodging for Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks and his passengers when the 25-year-old took off and led the trooper on a 9-mile police chase. Johnson-Shanks then abruptly slammed on his breaks and fired several rounds into Ponder's car. The trooper was later transported to a hospital in Princeton, KY, where he later died from his injuries.
Johnson-Shanks then fled the scene once again, inciting a manhunt that went into the night. When officers caught up to Johnson-Shanks he refused to surrender and he was fatally shot during a standoff with police.
