Michelle Obama Confronts Gay Rights Heckler During A Fundraiser Speech

The First Lady laid a smackdown on a heckler at a private fundraiser Tuesday, threatening to walk out of the event.

Obama left the lectern where she was speaking and approached Ellen Sturtz, according to the reporter pool account of the combative exchange, which was posted online by BuzzFeed.

Sturtz, a gay rights activist with the group Get Equal, had interrupted the FLOTUS to demand that President Obama sign an executive order prohibiting contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation and identity.

“Listen to me or you can take the mic, but I’m leaving,” the First Lady warned Sturtz, according to the pool report. “You all decide. You have one choice.”

People in the crowd then shouted for the FLOTUS to stay.

“You need to go!” one woman in the crowd told Sturtz, according to the pool report.

The protestor was escorted out, shouting “… lesbian looking for federal equality before I die.”

Sturtz was stunned by her close encounter with Obama, she later told The Washington Post.

“She came right down in my face,” the heckler said. “I was taken aback.”

The protester said she was willing to take the microphone.

“I said ‘I want your husband to sign the executive order,’” Sturtz, 56, told the newspaper.

“Her husband could sign this order tonight and protect 22% of the workforce in this country.”
