Indictment: Ex Georgia Police Officer Served as Hitman to Gangster Disciples

According to an unsealed indictment, Vancito Gumbs, a former Dekalb County, Georgia police officer confessed to playing the role of hitman for a gang on Wednesday. Along with Gumbs, 32 alleged gang members were indicted on federal racketeering charges, which was part of a three-year investigation that was taking place. The gang in question is the Georgia portion of the Gangster Disciples, a gang that originated in Chicago.

The charges that gang members face are financial fraud, arson, extortion, robbery, drug trafficking, attempted murder, and murder. The indictment states that while each gang member conducted illegal business, they would “commit at least two acts of racketeering.” According to U.S. Attorney John Horn, the criminal enterprise spreads across 24 states, and multiple arrests were also happening in eight other states.

The indictment also states that gang members of the Gangster Disciples were also extorting rappers in the Atlanta area. According to the police, the rappers were forced to become gang affiliated in order to avoid harm. 30 of the 32 indicted in the case were taken into police custody, while two are still at large.
