Drake and Kanye West Are Reportedly Skipping the Grammys
The Grammy Awards have presented television audiences with a yearly display of the most highly recognized talent in the music industry for nearly six decades. However, that may change for fans who are tuning in expecting to see a couple of the world's biggest stars, who report that they will not be attending this year's ceremony.
Despite being up for four awards, Justin Bieber is reportedly opting to skip the awards, as are both Drake and Kanye West, who are each up for eight trophies respectively. According to various news sources, the urban pop and hip hop performers don't wish to have their absence from the night's presentations and showcases characterized as a boycott, but there is word that they simply no longer recognize the Grammys as a show that proves relevant to their followers.
During an Oakland stop along his Saint Pablo Tour back in October, West told fans that he would boycott the awards if Frank Ocean's "Blonde" album didn't get nominated. Ocean would later announce that he decided against even submitting the album for consideration, stating: "That institution certainly has nostalgic importance. It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down."
Ocean isn't expected to show up, stating that he'd rather it be his "Kaepernick moment," than to support a show in which his peers are not properly represented. According to sources close to the Drake, West and Bieber, their reasons for skipping it are on par with the one expressed by Ocean. Ocean's decision is a curious one considering he himself won a Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy for his 2012 debut, "Channel Orange." It also signifies an interesting break for West, who is tied with Jay-Z as the 11th winningest artist in the award show's history, with 21 trophies.
