Will Smith to Boycott Oscars with Wife, Jada: This Is So Deeply Not About Me
Many have awaited a statement from Will Smith in regards to the lack of diversity at the Academy Awards. "It's really interesting, I've been nominated twice for Academy Awards and I've never lost to a White person," he began. "The first time I lost to Denzel [Washington], and the second time I lost to Forest Whitaker. For me that was huge, so when I see this list and series of nominations that come out - everybody is fantastic and that's the complexity of this issue."
According to Will, he was just as suprised as everyone else to see his wife's now-viral video when he returned home from out of the country. "She's deeply passionate and when she is moved she has to go," Will jokingly explained. "For Jada [Pinkett Smith], had I been nominated and no other people of color were, she would've made the video anyway. We'd still be here having this conversation." He then told the interviewer "this is so deeply not about me. This is about children that are gonna sit down and they're gonna watch this show and they're not going to see themselves represented."
"We've discussed it and we're a part of this community, but at this current time we're uncomfortable to stand there and say that this is okay," Will ended.
