The Hate Runs Deep: JasonDaHater (Viralvoice Exclusive Interview)
Jason Da Hater Interview: The HATE RUNS Deep
Jason Da Hater, is an artist rooted to the past. An unforgiving outlook into how hiphop has shaped itself around its fading fathers. An artist that grew up in the era where the blueprint to a MC was written. He remains one of the artist that stands the test of time. Proud to know the history, and the guardian to the future of this art. A tight grip to the values that made him love hip-hop and hates on anything that doesn't meet the standards. This is a exclusive interview of JASON DA HATER!
Tell us who is Jason Da Hater?
Jason Da Hater is a very sub par emcee/disgruntled hip hop fan. I am a fan of any team who is playing against the Dallas Cowboys and i am an aspiring house husband.
Let me start off by asking how did you come up with the name?
The name came about as a result openly disliking popular athletes, rappers, clothing items, and opinions from students and random people I came across. During the time I began to frequently rhyme, songs were out containing sayings and rhymes about haters. I decided to be the one everyone was talking about. I first revealed the name the Hater when i signed up for a battle one Wednesday at the Complex, it was hilarious. It's not an act, I'm a hater. The difference between me and other haters is that I won't hate behind your
back, I'm upfront with it. People expected, so they can accepted. Folks take constructive criticism and tough love as hate, so i am a hater.
When was your initial start into hiphop, what got you wanting to be an Mc?
I become a hip hop fan during the fresh fest, i think that was the name, concert at the mid south coliseum with Timex Social Club, Whodini, LL Cool J, and Run DMC. It was awesome. I always liked to entertain whether through playing ball, telling jokes, dancing or whatever. I use to play freestyle rhyming throughout the years. Rap'd for a few school projects. Once i finished school i began to rhyme more often. The only reason I started rhyming more is because I began to despise the rap music that was surfacing in the late
90's so I began to make music that I half way might like, and i suck too. If there were enough rappers out that I liked now, I'd quit.
So whose in the "HATERS" TOP 10 BEST MC'S of all time and since you a hater, TOP 5 MOST HATED MC'S of all time - explain?
Top 10 mc's of all time by Da Hater, no order: KRS 1, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, DMC, MJG, Ice Cube, Scarface, Mc Lyte, Chuck D, Busta Rhymes. Dislike too many mc's to name top 5 hated. Biggie and Tupac get on many folks list who started listening to rap near the time of the beef and untimely demise in my opinion.
You say you used to battle rap, how was it different then?
I am a below average battle rapper. We didnt do acapella battles. It use to be two emcees who were unaware they would battle each other. Back and forth on the spot freestyling over whatever beat the dj played. Very few had written rhymes, but most of the winners were off the top rhyming. At the complex on Wednesday night it went down. The Mighty Quinn was the man.
What you feel about Mc's of today and how their style evolved?
I don't think many mc's today are knowledgeable and appreciative of the pioneers of this hip hop field. Rap is the only genre of music, in my opinion, whose fans and artist are somewhat negative to the vets of their culture. As a result of not knowing the history of this hip hop game, many new mc's are lacking in something, skill, originality, purpose, showmanship, responsibility.
How do you see the Memphis movement in support for there artist?
The artist in Memphis need more fans, people who are not closely related to the artist, real fans. Artist support among each other, in the very small circle I've been in contact with, is strong. Would like for the radio powers here to get involved in helping push Memphis hip hop. However that works.
How was it growing up In the Memphis,TN?
Hot summers, Unpredictable weather, bonafide hoopers, curls, gangsta walking, Channel 5 wrestling, ice storms, Whitehaven football friday nights, clean tap water, Memphop. Cant complain, cant compare it to anywhere else. Football, family, and music was my things growing up.
Most rappers dont embrace their age and maturity in the game what makes you different?
I aint with all that cool and new school stuff. Im getting older by the second, so is everyone else. Cant run from it. I think folks believe it's cool to be young acting and appealing to younger crowds. I aint with all that, kids and grown folks aint on the same level.
I see you guys preformed and opened up for some LEGENDARY acts. How was those moments?
IMC we opened up for a few acts we are fans of, great experience performing wise. Didnt get a chance to really meet and chop it up with them, that would've been cool. We did meet Busy Bee and Dj Kool Herc though, that was super cool. I got to hug Mc Lyte, cant beat that. Roxxanne Shante too. Some
weird way I got a chance to get on stage with Common and freestyle with him, that was cool...I mean it was aite, hate.
For a time in the your city, IRON MIC COALITION owned it what happen, and will we see a reunion?
Well I would not say we owned it. We were making a nice run underground here though. But life strikes, got to take care of fam, job shifts change or what not. We never split though. Just working at a slower pace. It's possible we could have dug a little deeper, but it was pre-internet friendly time frame.
Okay Hater, let us know when we getting our hands on your next album, and the concept of it?
Well...I have an EP coming out called "Like Vegetables" produced but not approved by Paragon. I have a mixtape coming out called "You're a Nation, number 1 flow". Both should be available on bandcamp and hard copy in August. I am on the Medicine Men album, which is a combination of Iron Mic Coalition and the Memfist 10 band, which will be available before the end of the year .
