Eminem Gets Backlash for Realistic Gunshot Sounds During Bonnaroo Set
Eminem's performance at the 2018 Bonnaroo Festival caused quite an uproar after the use of a realistic gunshot sound.
The "Not Afraid" rapper was the headliner and closed out the show on Saturday night (June 9). While fans were excited to see him, his performance of "Kill You," from his 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP, had people ducking for cover. In a video posted of the show, people are seen enjoying the performance, but it abruptly ends with a loud gunshot sound effect that scares the crowd as some can be heard screaming.
Fans took to Twitter to share their experience and the effect it had on them.
"I hate to be the one to say it, but being someone who suffers from very mild PTSD, it was EXTREMELY irresponsible and distasteful to end songs w the shot gun sound effect," one Twitter user posted. "I have grown up loving Eminem and his music, but I was extremely triggered to the point of tears."
"I was having a good time at Eminem's set then he played a realistic gunshot noise," someone else noted. "The whole crowd ducked, and I’ve never felt more traumatized and ready to panic. completely inappropriate."
Of course, not everyone was upset with sound effect, and some poked fun at those affected.
"So apparently Eminem is performing at Bonnaroo right now, and a bunch of younger people are losing their s**t because his set included realistic gunshot sound effects," another person added. "I dunno what song(s) it was from, but it sounds to me like a bunch of people became Eminem fans post 2002."
With the rise of mass shootings around the country, the gunshot sound in the large crowd was likely to have an adverse effect.
