Recently, Jay-Z released his album 4:44 to wide spread acclaim from fans and critics alike. At first, the release was only exclusive to Sprint and TIDAL, and from there the album hit Amazon and Apple Music. However, Spotify has yet to see the album reach its platform. In April 2017, news broke that Jay-Z allegedly removed all of his music from Spotify because he feels the shuffle option available on platforms “de-value” the flow of albums. The removal of all his music from the platform reportedly served as a form of protest against Spotify’s ad-supported free version available to all.
Jay-Z’s decision to withhold 4:44 from being on Spotify is allegedly costing him up to $1 million per week according to Billboard. However, other sources noted that the rapper would only pull an estimated $250,000 through Spotify’s premium paid tier for one week.
