Fan at College Football Game Wears Obama Mask with Noose
The University of Wisconsin-Madison issued a statement condemning the actions of a spectator who was spotted wearing a Barack Obama mask with a noose around his neck, during its football match-up against the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday, October 29.
“The costume, while repugnant AND COUNTER TO THE VALUES OF THE UNIVERSITY AN ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT, was an exercise of the individual’s right to free speech,” read a statement issued by university officials. "The university also exercised its rights by asking the individual to remove the offensive parts of the costume."
As a matter of custom, fans often show up to football games in masks and face paint, but they typically do so in a fashion that represents the team they are cheering on. And while the timing of the incident might suggest to some that the fans intention was to join in the celebration of Halloween festivities, the game was not themed in honor of the holiday. According to employees at the venue, nobody was cited entering the with an Obama mask, indicating that he may have carried it in and changed at some point during the game.
