The FBI has been dispatched to assist the Suffolk County Police Department in its investigation of the  MS-13 street gang, following the discovery of a 5th teenager whose death they believe the Long Island faction of the gang to be responsible for. 35 gang members were also arrested after the body was found, including five "violent, high-ranking gang members."
The skeletal remains of Jose Pena-Hernandez, 18, was found in the woodlands behind Pilgrim Psychiatric Center on October 17; four months after he went missing. According to officials, Pena-Hernandez was a member of MS-13. His death is believed to be gang related.
Just last month citizens of Brentwood were put on edge after four teenage corpses were discovered within a week. On September 13, Nisa Mickens was found beaten to death on a local street on the eve of her 16th birthday. The following day her best friend Kayla Cueva, 16, was also found dead in a nearby yard. Their cases are believed to be related, as it is reported that Mickens and Cueva vanished after going out for a walk together the night prior. On September 23, authorities were called to another gruesome discovery, as the remains of 19-year-old Oscar Acosta [who had been missing since May] and 15-year-old Miguel Garcia-Moran [missing since February], were found in a wooded industrial area. All four teens were students at the same high school.
MS-13 has been expanding on Long Island for over a decade. Investigators have said that the murders are likely the doing of the El Salvadorian gang. “It makes me feel bad that people think this of all Salvadorans,” a citizen by the name of Ana told reporters. “Violence was the reason I left — when they killed my brother. And now we are experiencing the same violence.”
