George Zimmerman closed out his auction of the gun used to shoot Trayvon Martin on Wednesday (May 18), with a reported six figure sale that he says will help fund his fight against several pro-Martin causes. While the amount of the final bid, and the name of the bidder has not been officially publicized, an offer of $138,900 came in for the Kel-Tec PF-9, just a minute before bidding closed.  While a vetting processed had eliminated several bogus parties since the auction began, auctions website verified more than 180 bids by nine committed users by the time of the sale.
“Our part in the process is over, and we are going back to business as usual,” Missouri's United Gun Group said in a statement confirming the purchase. The group agreed to host the auction after GunBroker.com rejected Zimmerman's attempt to sell the weapon through their site. They defended that the sale abided by federal law and was facilitated with no interest other than to grant him his individual right as a merchant.
Zimmerman's marketing of the gun included him listing it as "an American firearm icon" and "a piece of American history". Media coverage of recent remarks he made towards the Martin family perhaps brought attention to the auction as well, as he made waves Tuesday when he told a reporter than Martin's parents "didn't raise their son right." The UGG website held two separate auctions for the weapon, one for pre-qualified bidders and one for the general public. Earlier in the week a $65 million bid drew sensational headlines before the bidder was discredited as a saboteur.
Zimmerman is reported to have said he looks forward to using the money generated by the sale to fight "Black Lives Matter", to oppose "Hillary Clinton's anti-firearm rhetoric" and to attempt to destroy the career of Angela Correy, the prosecutor who indicted him following the 2012 Florida murder.
