Justin Craven, a former South Carolina police officer was sentenced to three years probation for the shooting of an unarmed black man after stopping him on the side of the road. The police officer was initially facing up to 10 years in prison, and a $1,000 fine. However, as part of a plea deal, the officer’s felony charge was dropped.

According to Huffington Post, Craven chased the 68-year-old driver, Ernest Satterwhite for about 13 miles before stopping him on the side of the road. From there, the officer got out of his car, approached the driver and began shooting at him through the window. Craven admitted that he fired shots into the driver’s car. Prosecutors say there was a struggle between the two at the car window.

Craven’s attorney said of the outcome “We couldn’t ask for a better outcome as far as the sentence is concerned. (He) got probation, no house arrest, and he’s pretty much free to go live his life.”
