CDC Half of Gay or Bisexual Black Men Will Likely Be Diagnosed With HIV

According to a new report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly half of all gay or bisexual Black men and a quarter of gay Latino men will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. The findings are the first to represent a lifetime risk for the disease, but the CDC's  Dr. Jonathan Mermin believes that there is promise for reduction of the disease in the future.

"The prevention and care strategies we have at our disposal today provide a promising outlook for future reductions of HIV infections and disparities in the U.S., but hundreds of thousands of people will be diagnosed in their lifetime if we don't scale up efforts now."

People living in the South posed a greater risk for contracting the disease, but Washington D.C. carried the greatest risk , with 1 in 13 people projected to contract HIV, followed by Maryland which had a 1 in 49 risk.
