Whats Happening in Memphis May 29- June 1st
So. First let me apologize for my absence on Memorial Day
weekend. The turn up was real and I didn’t
get a chance to let yall know what was poppin.
My bad.
Charge it to the turn up.
We are now about to hit the official summer season in Memphis
TN. And if you know anything about the “REAL” Memphis, you know that means there
will be a virtual cornucopia, (i.e. a shit load) of events happening at all
times.
This weekend the events that have me ready to hit the town
are:
Thursday, May 29th
What: Memphis
Italian Fest
Where: Marquette Park (Park and Mt Moriah) May 29-31
Why Im interested :
this is the 25th year for the festival. It’s an even the whole
family can enjoy, with lots of food, music and fun. Check it out
What:Burgers and
Brews
Where: Local GastroPub on the Square 6-8:30
Why Im Interested: This event is hosted by Gideon’s
promise, an organization dedicated to improving the quality of service from
public defenders and driving defense reform across the South! In addition, a free burger and great speakers
make this an event I am definitely interested in.
What: HypeLife Artist Melting Pot
Where: At
Brinsons’
Why Im Interested:
it’s a weekly happening, always chill, always good talent. And good
chicken.
What: Peabody
Rooftop Party
Where: rooftop of the Peabody hotel
Why Im Interested:
a long standing event that consistently showcases great talent, in a casual atmosphere. It can sometimes be two crowded but always a
good time.
What: Overton
Squared
Where: Overton Square
Why Im interested:
This is a new weekly happening but THIS week is Ladies, night. The entertainment will feature two bands with women front persons (look at all
that political correctness!) and 1.00 of
every paid admission is being donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Friday, May 30th
There are plenty of events going on Friday. Its trolley night and zombie celebrations
abound in addition to a host of fun, entertaining events. I am only going to
highlight one. The #FortheBrothers
concert.
What: Chinese
Connection Dub Embassy, best known as,
CCDE is a local reggae band. The band has performed everywhere around Memphis
and their talent and positive vibes have touched many. Three of the band members are brothers,
(Omar, Joseph and David) and the recently experienced the unexpected loss of
their mother. Local Artists and promoters have all joined
together to host the For the Brothers concert, and all proceeds will be given
to the brothers to help recoup and offset the cost of medical bills and funeral
expenses.
Where: Newbys,
Theater Side. 539 S Highland. Doors open
at 7:00 pm
Why Im interested:
aside from what’s mentioned above, this is one of the most talented, and
diverse lineups you will ever get to witness. The lineup has everything from Hip Hop to punk
rock and everything in between. It’s a great
show, for a great cause. Come out and
support.
Saturday May 31st
What : The Southern Region Tattoo and Body Art Expo
Where: Pipkin Building, (fairgrounds) May 31-June 1st
Why Im Interested: I love body art and tattoo’s and
this event benefits St Jude and Veterans.
Not to mention they will also feature a car and motorcycle show . Sounds
like a great event
What: Gypsy
Where: Playhouse on the square
Why Im Interested: this is one of my favorite plays and the
Playhouse always ensures that their productions are on par with the more
expensive theater offerings. This is
the last weekend to catch Gypsy.
What: Levitt
Shell concert Series Featuring Ester Rada
Where: the Levitt Shell in Overton Park @ 7:30pm
Why I’m interested:
I love the Levitt shell. it’s always a nice place to take the kid and
let her run around and release energy while we enjoy family friendly and
diverse musical offerings. Ester Rada is an Israeli born, Ethiopian soul
singer with a unique sound that I am definitely looking
forward to catching live. Gather a few
blankets and get a picnic basket prepared by my new favorite Local self serve
wine bar, GreenCork and you are good to go!!
What: Suddenly Shelly
Where: The Hub
Lounge, 515 E.H. Crump blvd 8pm
Why Im interested:
it’s the first installment of the summer youth series and features Shelly Gilmore, performing 5 original
songs. It’s a family friendly, all ages
event.
What: Lively Up Reggae
Nights
Where: The Lions Den
581 N. Third Street
Why Im Interested:
its pretty much a guarantee that there will be positive energy and great
entertainment when Tameka Daniels (Artistik Lounge, One Mic, City of
MyemPhasis) is involved. Add to that a CCDE performance and one of my favorite djs, Siphne Aaye from Artistik
Approach, you can guarantee this will be a great night of entertainment!
Sunday June 1st.
What: Chef D. Arthurs Brunch Day Party
Where: Beale Street Landing from 2-6 (tickets
required in advance and can be purchased at www.darthurscatering.com)
Why Im interested: I’m a foodie and a food lover,
which aint always the same thing and I have been falling in love with his food
pictures so I jumped at the opportunity to brunch. On top of the fact. Brunch.
As an upwardly mobile, part-time member of the bougie black coalition, It
is mandatory that I love all things brunch. That's it for me, if you have any other event suggestions, feel free to post them in the comments!
