Kaz Hirai says PS4 is foremost a video game console

    sony CEO Kazuo Hirai may not be a surfer, but he sure knows how to ride a wave of consumer resentment. The former PlayStation boss spoke at AllThingsD's D11 conference about how Sony plans to approach the PS4.

    "The most important thing we need to do is agree and understand that the PS4 is a great video game console that appeals to video gamers," he said, according to The Verge. "If we miss that part, I don't think we get the initial establishment of the console. That formula has worked for us with all our consoles, including the PS3."

    Hirai's comments contrasted the PS4's gamer-centric reveal to the Xbox One's more broadly focused announcement event. Sony's console will also have some other entertainment apps and functions revealed in coming months, but "it's first and foremost a video game console."

    We'll see more of both companies' plans for the future when Xbox One and PS4 return to the spotlight at E3.
