Rise of the New Female MC's: Da Ladie Interview

Hip-hop has failed our women, left them falling in the footsteps of only a few with success. But, now a new Generation of freedom breaks the barrier and DaLadie guarantees to be that movement. The Official Interview with DaLadie only at VMagazine.

#1 -Tell us who is Da Ladie?
The proper representation of a Queen! I’m a mother, wife, artist, and entrepreneur, student, who is devoted to representing my kind.

#2 -How did you come up with that name?
I was given the name Lady K when I was 14 or 15. As I grew and developed into an artist, I wanted to set myself apart from the pack. Instead of being just another lady I changed it to Da Ladie. It’s strong and it says boss, which is who I am.

#3- who was your favorite rapper growing up - And who are you listening to now?
Growing up I was into No Limit and 36 Mafia. Didn’t have one artist that I favorite more than another but I listened to MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Mia X, La Chat, and Gangsta Boo. Right now I am into T.I.

#4- Who are you sign with, and how is the label life, and how did you meet up with them?
am signed to Royal Hustlaz Entertainment. I signed myself. We are in the building stages creating a name for myself as an artist and brand. Right now the label consist of me, Da Ladie, as artist and owner, and Jay Threat, as producer. I made a game changing decision to go back to school for Music Business at Full Sail University. I am scheduled to graduate in 2014.

#5- How was your life growing up?
I have always been above my time. I was raised in the church but always did my own thing. Being the only child you are easily influenced by your surroundings. I lost my brother and father by the time I was 5 and when I reached middle school my mother was diagnosed with sarcoidosis. I went from getting everything I wanted to not getting anything at all. I turned into a hustler instantly. Survival instincts kicked in and I made things happen. From selling duffle bags of candy and snacks at school to learning my way around the dope game. By the time I was 16 I had a boyfriend in the feds and I was pregnant with my first child. Those where defining moments that led me to become an artist and take music serious.

#6- Which hip-hop decade was the hottest 80,90,00?
Being that I was born in the 80’s and to young to remember I would say the 90’s. I lived them. I was really into 36,No-Limit, 69 boys, Salt-N-Pepper, Queen Latifah, MC-Lyte, YoYo, and whatever song we could dance to. By far the 90’s was the decade.

#7- Nikki Minaj or LilKim/Queen Latifah or Mc Lyte?
Queen Latifah and Mc Lyte. Scratch the other 2. I believe Lil Kim started it and Nicki Minaj ended it. You do not have any females on the for-front that represent real women anymore. Where are the Queen Latifah’s, MC Lyte’s, Salt-N-Peppers, Lady of Rage, YOYO’s of our time? We are all underground because mainstream has popularized whatever this is that they call music now.

#8- So any other female rappers you got beef with, be honest
I only give out positive energy because that is what I want to get back. Only time I do beef is when I’m making stew.

#9- Craziest Groupie Moment? Has to be MySpace. There was a young lady who decided to take my photos and pretend as if she was me. She put on her profile she was gay and I asked her to take my photos down. She refused until I meet up with her. I was dumbfounded. I had to make signs with my MySpace url on it with my face so they could determine the imposter. Eventually the page was removed.

#10- Where was the best performance you ever had?
I can name a few but my favorite would have to be in Pittsburgh at Shadow Lounge. I performed there twice but the 2nd time I came Kurtis Blow was the opening act. He gave us words of encouragement, performed and we where super amped to perform in front of someone who is considered a godfather of hip-hop.

#11- Memphis a good place for up and coming artist/ and where do most artists go wrong? Memphis has a rich history in music. Naturally it should be a good place for artist. Depending on your art it is beneficial to be a Memphian. The possibilities for singers are endless but for rap artist like myself there are not enough outlets. Our music scene is almost obsolete. Most artist go wrong by not taking their craft seriously, being too cocky to soon, and wearing their feelings on their sleeves. You can’t have emotions in this business because you are swimming in a sea full of sharks.

#12- For people who haven’t heard any of your music, what are they missing?
I am what the game is missing. Everything needs balance and there is no proper balance on the female music scene anymore. As an artist I can get gutter and remain sexy. I can be sexy and remain classy. I create music with substance but I also know how to party. I’m a personal writer and a storyteller. Nothing you hear in my music is fictional. I am either living it or have already been there and done that. I provide quality music that is versatile but still depicts who I am and my life.

#13- New Projects Fill Us in
I am currently working on my comeback project “Back At It” hosted by DJ LW set to release this spring. Working on a T-shirt line and the launch of a new website.

There is nothing greater then a female rapper stepping up and pushing and grinding for her music. The rap game need more positive female artists the lived the everyday hustle besides being raped at a young age, selling there body, selling drugs etc. We need more music to relate to because I dnt know how it feel to b raped, sell drugs etc. But I know how it feels to grind at a young age n being thats what I can relate to. Listening to Da Ladie music motivates me to do bigger things n to stop dreaming a dream and just go after it. Da Ladie is very inspiring, she gives positive feed back, never try to expose ppl that tried to bring them down always has positive feed bk about anything. Ladie im here to tell u u r the GREATEST not only great but REALEST female artist alive. U work hard thru good and tragic times n it never stop u. Ive been ur #1 Fan since day 1 n im always goin to b ur #1 fan! I know ur not goin to stop til u stop! Well done Queen....♥ur #1 Fan Shun B.
