The trial of South Carolina church shooter Dylann Roof was disrupted on Wednesday [December 7], when his mother suffered a heart attack during opening statements.
Courtroom personnel rushed to the aid of Amy Roof, 57, after she collapsed while prosecutor Jay Richardson gave detail on the heinous events that took place the morning Dylann is believed to have opened fire on and executed nine parishioners at Mother Emanuel church in Charleston. After regaining her footing, Mrs. Roof is reported to have repeatedly apologized as she was helped out of the courtroom.
The trial's first day had already been an emotional one, with several members of the victims families reportedly breaking out in tears before proceedings took place. Heading into the second day of proceedings on Thursday, the defense team had prepared a statement urging the judge to consider declaring a mistrial. Their request was denied.
