An interracial couple says they've considered abandoning plans to keep a town in Cincinnati, Ohio their permanent residence, after they returned from a Thanksgiving vacation to find that their home had been vandalized with racist slogans.
When Pat and Joe Jude selected to go away and spend the holidays with their daughter this year, they hadn't imagined that they'd come back to find that their house had been broken into. Swastikas, the N-word, and "white power" had been spray painted across their walls, and the vandals went so far as to pour cement down their pipes, the Judes say. While the amount of destruction was costly, it was the violation of their safety and dignity that left the Judes floored. It has been six years since their son Jay took his own life in an incident which the family says had to do with the depression he suffered from being bullied in school, as a biracial student. The couple have been married for 34 years, but attest to having experienced overt racism since moving to Cincinnati in 2006.
Thanks to a GoFundMe page established for the sake of raising funds to repair the damage done, Pat and Joe have felt a sense of solace they say, and it has little to do with it's material success. "The outpouring of support is so amazing. After the death of our son my husband lost faith in humanity and now with this horrible senseless hate crime, it seemed hopeless," the Judes wrote in a statement posted to their GoFundMe page. They had succeeded their goal of $2,000, raising over $32,000 before the weekend. "With the outpouring of love from our family, friends and strangers especially during this time of year, has helped us realize that the people who did this were in the minority and the majority of Americans are so kind and don't believe in hate and racial inequality."
