Ronald McDonald is going into hiding for a bit. The iconic clown mascot of McDonalds is laying low until the clown craze in the country dies down.
The latest fad is people dressing up like creepy clowns then trying to scare people, often in remote areas, and sometimes carrying a knife. Police in other countries like England and Canada have intervened, investigating multiple reports of the scary clown sightings. It's unclear what started the trend, but some attribute it the book turned movie "It" by Stephen King. The best-selling author took to Twitter to comment on the prank.
“Hey guys, time to cool the clown hysteria – most of ‘em are good, cheer up the kiddies, make people laugh,” King wrote.
McDonald's announced that Americans will see less of the memorable, red-haired jester in the bright yellow and red suit as the company remains "thoughtful in respect to Ronald's participation in community events" as a result of the "current climate around clown sightings in communities," according to the Associated Press.
It's unclear how often McDonald's red-haired mascot makes appearances, how it will change, and for how long.
