49ers Announce Colin Kaepernick's Takeover of the Starting QB Role

After a week of speculation as to whether or not Chip Kelly will be playing Colin Kaepernick in an effort to turn the team's misfortune's around, the 49ers head coach confirmed on Tuesday [October 11] that the 6-year franchise quarterback has been designated to start San Francisco's Week-6 game in Buffalo.

'I think offensively, we need to be better and we need to just make a move. It"s not Blaine"s fault. I think it"s just as a group, offensively, we need to be better in a lot of ways, so we"re going to see what we can do to make a move here," Kelly told reporters during a post-practice press conference.

Following Thursday's 33-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, fans were abuzz about whether it was time to make the switch, seeing how the defeat constituted the niners' fourth in a row. Much of the chatter was amplified during the game with play-by-play from the network's commentators oddly conflicting with the crowd's reaction to Blaine Gabbert's performance at the helm. As he repeatedly overthrew his receivers and found himself on the run after misreading the defense, former NY Giants QB turned CBS sportscaster Phil Simms seemed to embellish Gabbert's success. Meanwhile, chants of "We want Kaep!" echoed from various sections of the stadium.

There was doubt among cynics that Kelly would play Kaepernick this early in the season. Up until this point, coach Kelly has expressed concern about whether Kaepernick is fit to withstand contact after an off-season in which he came under the knife for two surgeries and a significant loss of weight. Some of the skepticism had to do with those suspecting that Kaepernick would be a liability considering his contract bares a clause that would guarantee him his full $14.5 million salary if he gets hurt.

There is word that the 49ers organization and Kaepernick have reached an agreement to restructure his contract in a manner which will award him performance incentives in exchange for an alleviation of the injury clause, but according to sources Kaepernick has yet to sign the paperwork.
