Megan J-Stages: Album Review

The click of her heels echo against the wooden stage. As the crowd cheers, a peaceful yet chaotic serenity. Welcome to the official album review of STAGES, by Megan J.

Review Inside-And Exclusive Download
The album starts off distant. A very mystic and heart warming opening. The guitar on "Stages" is well placed as it feels like a concert. The singing on stages, and the delivery is well done. The message is short lived as this is only a small intro, with a big meaning. The second song "I Refuse" pulls out strong. Her lyrics and delivery are aggressive, and has a 90's tempo. The singing captures the listener, as Megan coast at a constant tempo. It has a certain rock, that keeps you moving. The message of the song is a "go to" for R&B artist, but Megan doesn't let that hold her back. As it stills feels refreshing to hear and doesn't sound dated. The reverb behind Megan's voice during the verse doesn't compliment her well. As it leaves to much echo behind her letting the sound lag. "Onetime" comes in and let you get to hear Megan voice more openly. She expresses herself well and sings with emotions. Some parts she could of went for more, she seem to go for but back out vocal wise at the end of the note. She feature's "Ricache" which compliments the song very well. The song is well done and has a rap duet push. Pushing harder where the notes granted her vocal freedom, would of granted a more satisfying drop to the record as a whole.  "A week too Long" has a radio vibe to it. But, early in the song and big note, was off. Which was critical for the records success. The song is not well mixed, as when the chorus comes in. She sings the word "breath" and it actually peaks, and has Es to it. It just was a very misguided song that would needed to be re-recorded and done more professional. The lyrics are on point, as it has the lyrics of a hit, just not the performance of one. "Unplugged" comes in and delivers and R&B ballad with Promise as a feature. Its start off with his verse. The piano being played at the beginning sets the tone. And gives a loving atmosphere. Promise voice is warm, and unique. It's very clear and well sung. His notes end very clean and the song has a slow motion vibe to it. Megan comes in with artistic vibrato but, it doesn't end clean, But she picks up and delivers a very well sung verse. The song as a whole is great, and Megan voice starts to the find its place. The echo and the delivery and the note she hold at the end is chilling its so good. That you feel the emotion of the song. This is one of Megan's best performances and you see where she shines as a singer. "More Than One" takes a slower, darker tone. Which isn't really a strong suit we found for Megan. As the higher notes seem to strain, but not break. What we like is the warmth of Megan's voice. And when she presses the higher notes it just fails to hold up. The song is very scattered and sometimes is overbearing to the listener as the chorus stacks in multiply voices that didn't blend as they should. But then, your hit with "Sweet Lullaby" the notes are more controlled and the vibe is refreshing. The singing is passionate, and holds on great lyrics, she cuts off notes perfectly and the reverb compliments the mystic vibe. This is Megan J's strongest suit. Her vibrato is crisp and her highs and lows flow together into the arrange. Although the song didn't have the best Mic quality, she preformed it. And this song literally stands tall and she delivers her voice on a grand scale. "Intermission Intuitions" breaks the mold. Virghost a featured artist kicks off a well placed and intricate verse. A poetic vibe and deep verse, almost like spoken word. The song has a space kick or neo hip hop vibe. Megan comes in strong with the chorus. The bridge after the chorus is long winded and drops the vibe. Megan tries her hand at rap, which is actually done well. Her voice is light and obviously more fitted for singing, but she actually delivered the verse great. The song as a whole just doesn't hold the passion as the artist had more of a tug of war instead of collaboration. "Winner" starts off with a synthetic saxophone as MJ jumps right in. And she sings this beautifully. The beat fits her perfectly as this song gives you such a good feeling. She has a layed R&B feel that we love. This song is great, almost everything was done well. It's the premiere record on the album, its the single, its the hit, its everything. She delivers the complete package and you love her delivery and message. Stages, is a album with its up and downs. The downs never go so low that you take it out. And the highs go high enough to make you fall in love with Megan. It seems she felt unguided and how to move some of her notes. As she delivered some songs with moments so good it was bone chilling. We would of hoped for more topics and more risk, vocal wise. But, if the risk where taken make sure it ended well. Megan's heart is there, and she wants to give a show to listener, just needs to work on the showmanship. Stages is a great splash of Megan and the next entry we look forward to seeing her growth as the potential for Megan is endless.
